Bulgaria Reports Largest Monthly Decline in Construction Output in EU at End of 2024

Construction output in the European Union increased by 0.4% in December of 2024, compared to November. During the same period, construction output within the eurozone countries remained unchanged, according to the latest initial estimates by Eurostat, published on the website of the statistical agency on Thursday.

In December 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, the production of the construction sector decreased by 0.8% in the EU, and by 0.1%  in the eurozone.

In Bulgaria, construction sector output declined in December compared to November for the first time since June last year, marking the sharpest drop among all EU countries with available data, according to Eurostat.

Compared to the same month in 2023, construction production in Bulgaria continued to expand  in December for the twelfth consecutive month (by 2.2%). This still represents a slowdown in growth compared to November, when the growth of construction production reached 8.6, the highest since April 2021.

Among the EU countries, the largest annual increase in production of the construction sector was recorded by Spain (11.2%), Czechia (9.7%) and Slovakia (5.8%). The most significant decline was recorded in Romania (12.9%), Poland (9.9%) and Austria (9.3%).
