Asked by BTA about the price of small modular reactors, which were highlighted as a promising technology by some of the leaders at the Global Climate Action Summit in Dubai on Saturday, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said the price depends on the reactor's model, design and size. Mobile reactors could cost around USD 1 billion, while large ones could cost USD 7 or 8 billion.

Also on Saturday, Bulgarian Energy Minister Rumen Radev said that small modular reactors with a capacity below 500 megawatts are an interesting option but they cannot be an end in themselves. "Technologies are evolving and we need to keep an eye on these developments, including nuclear fusion," he added.

After the Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy by 2050 was announced, Grossi told reporters there is a need for international regulation of safety measures for nuclear facilities, the way this is in civil aviation.

The IAEA and Belgium announced on Saturday that the first-ever Nuclear Energy Summit will be held in Brussels on March 22, 2024.
