There is no doubt that the prices paid for transmission and distribution will be increased,  Chairman of the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) Ivan Ivanov said on Tuesday during a round table in Sofia dedicated to the development of electricity networks and grid services.

According to him, transmission and distribution prices will be increased because there has been a sharp increase in inflation in recent years and the regulator will take this into account. However Ivanov said that this could not cover the increased costs of network services to the extent that they should be implemented. The second way to finance network development is through EU funds.

New trends for network development are taking several directions. Ivanov pointed out that energy storage systems need to be built. In addition, electricity consumption management needs to be improved, which requires direct consumer participation and the presence of smart metres. The grid must be optimized and become increasingly decentralized, decarbonized and digitized.

Ivanov added that the problem of network development is not only in Bulgaria. He said that studies have shown that by 2040 the length of electricity transmission and distribution networks in the world should double, which means that 8 million km of new networks should be built in Europe. This comes to show that the problem is not only regional, Ivanov said.
