Underground gas storage facilities in the European Union were on average 99.55% full as of November 5, according to the latest data from the specialized platform Aggregated Gas Storage Inventory (AGSI), released on Monday. The Bulgarian gas storage facility in Chiren was 97.66% full. European Gas Analytics data show that 66.70% of natural gas in Europe was LNG (liquefied natural gas).

In the EU, the storage facilities in Germany, Spain and France currently have the highest full capacity level. German facilities are 100.03% full Spanish ones are 100.36% full, while French ones are 99.88% full. According to the Association of Gas Storage Operators in Germany, 100% full capacity reflects facility capacity under reference conditions. If the gas cools, its volume decreases and the storages can hold more gas, at which point it can exceed 100%.

European regulations on measures to guarantee the security of gas supplies in order to guarantee the energy security of EU countries introduced an obligation for storage facilities to be filled to 90% of their capacity no later than November 1, 2023.
