Two research complexes will carry out high-tech research in agri-food systems, bioeconomy and blue economy, the Cabinet decided on Wednesday. The facilities are part of the National Science Infrastructure Roadmap.

The Agri-Food Systems and Bioeconomy Competence Centre brings together the Food, Nutrition and Health Science Infrastructure; the Centre for Plant Health Diagnostics and Technology; and the National Infrastructure for Research and Innovation in Agriculture and Food.

The merger will create a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary science complex with distributed research infrastructure in agroecology, plant health, precision plant breeding and food processing and nutrition. The aim is to achieve a digital transformation of the entire agri-food sector and build on the infrastructural, scientific and innovation capacity of universities and research organisations in the field.

The Centre of Competence Blue, Innovative and Sustainable Management of Coastal Marine and Riverine Environment and Resources comprises a merger of the Infrastructure for Sustainable Development in Marine Research and Digital Technology Systems for a Clean and Secure Environment (5D ALLIANCE).

Thus, a distributed scientific infrastructure will be created and developed, bringing together multidisciplinary expertise, competences and tools to support the Blue Economy in the Black Sea region and the lower Danube river basin.
