Cellist Pavel Gomziakov will perform Antonin Dvorak’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor with the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra as part of the "Masters on Four Strings" cycle on April 25.
Gomziakov’s cello dates from 1703.
"This is my treasure, a very famous cello for two reasons. The first is that it was made in 1703 in Rome by the then master David Tecchler and is the best preserved cello by that luthier. And the second is that it was owned by Bernhard Romberg, the most famous cellist in the early 18th century, who was a friend of Beethoven and some of his works were first played on this very instrument," explained Gomziakov.
He will be playing with the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B minor by Antonin Dvorak as part of the "Masters on Four Strings" cycle.
Gomziakov said the concerto is one of the most seminal works for cello in the entire cello repertoire. "Dvorak was very proud of this piece. He wrote only one movement of it at the beginning and stopped. Then he composed the violin and piano concerto and only after that did he come back to the idea of composing the cello concerto. He composed this concerto outside the canon for cello at the time. This is the first heroic, romantic concerto for cello ever," said the soloist.
Gomziakov said that this would be his third concert in Bulgaria and the first with an orchestra. So far he has given two concerts in Sofia and Ruse, and in just two days he is scheduled for a recital in Spain.
Pavel Gomziakov was born in the city Tchaikovsky in the Ural region of Russia in 1975. He began cello studies at the age of nine. At the age of fourteen he moved to Moscow where he studied at the Gnessin School, and, later, at the Moscow State Conservatory, with Prof. Dmitri Miller. In 2000 he continued his studies with Prof. Natalia Schakhovskaya at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia, Madrid. Later he graduated from the “cycle de perfectionnement” of the Paris National Conservatory, class of Philippe Muller.
As a soloist and chamber music artist he has performed throughout the world, collaborating with such artists as Eldar Nebolsin, Zakhar Bronn, Augustin Dumay, Louis Lortie, Jose-Luis Garcia, Asencio Jesus Lopez Cobos, Anthony Ros-Marba, Christopher Wareen-Green, Trevor Pinnock and many others.
