Cabinet earmarked BGN 1.1 million for the implementation of activities in the first phase of the government-approved National Education with Science Programme. Over 5,000 students with an interest in science from 150 schools will be able to engage in research projects with established scientists. The aim is to harness the potential of academia in schools in activities with research, innovation, pedagogical, analytical and logistical relevance to school practice.

The programme will support schools in the implementation of new and traditional extracurricular and out-of-school activities. Its focus is on developing and improving existing science competitions, summer schools and networks of small research communities. There will be opportunities to create internship programmes of a research and innovation nature for high school students, multimedia content for educational purposes, among others.

The programme will be implemented in three phases between 2024 and 2028. The aim is to develop research and project-based education, to support at least 1,000 teachers in its implementation, and to have greater involvement of museums, observatories and planetariums in the provision of educational resources. Academic sector support for school STEM centres will also be provided.
