Parliament Rejects Resignation Requirement for BNB Governor, Deputy Governor Leading Caretaker Government

Parliament rejected Wednesday proposed amendments to the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) Act tabled by the caretaker Council of Ministers. According to the proposal, if the BNB governor or deputy governor agrees to be appointed as caretaker Prime Minister under Article 99, Paragraph 5 of the Constitution, they must resign from their position at the BNB.

The proposal was supported by 33 MPs from the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria coalition. It was voted against by 93 MPs from Vazrazhdane, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms – New Beginning, the BSP – United Left coalition, Moral, Unity, Honour (MECh), and one MP from GERB-UDF. A total of 101 MPs abstained, including representatives from GERB-UDF, Democracy, Rights and Freedoms, and There Is Such a People.
