Deputy Minister of Defence Radostin Iliev held a meeting here on Wednesday with NATO Assistant Secretary General Carlo Borghini, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence reported later in the day.

In the context of effectively adapting the Alliance and its structures to the new security environment, the main focus during the meeting was on the most current topics related to the NATO’s priorities in human resource management.

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Iliev welcomed the NATO Human Resources Strategy (2024-2030), which was adopted last year. He emphasized that it provides a solid foundation for achieving the adaptation of the Alliance's structures to new challenges through the modernization of processes and ensuring fair representation of all allies. He noted the increased number of Bulgarian citizens working in NATO's International Staff, constituting 1.2% of the total number of employees, and expressed hope that this positive trend would continue and lead to higher representation of Bulgaria.

The Deputy Minister of Defense expressed appreciation for the personal efforts and commitment of Carlo Borghini in achieving the objectives set out in the Strategy, particularly in ensuring a fair and balanced geographical distribution of expert positions among all Allies in the Alliance. He highly praised the measures taken to raise awareness and improve the preparation of candidates.

The NATO Assistant Secretary General’s visit to Sofia aims to raise awareness among the Bulgarian expert community about the opportunities to take up positions within NATO structures and to prepare for the application process.

Carlo Borghini presented career opportunities in a public lecture to attendees and guests at the G. S. Rakovski Military Academy later in the day, the press release said.

As part of his two-day visit, the guest presented earlier NATO’s human resources strategy to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ivan Kondov.
