Bulgaria relies on the objectivity and precision of financial data provided by the European Court of Auditors (ECA), President Rumen Radev said during his meeting with Bulgaria's representative to ECA, Iliana Ivanova, the President’s press secretariat said on Wednesday.

Radev added that Member States of the European Union should make strategic decisions based on a precise evaluation of European finances.

During the meeting, Radev questioned ECA's oversight of EU finances and how financial discipline is maintained within the union as debt rises. The discussion also included insights from ECA's Annual Report on the EU budget implementation for 2023 and Bulgaria's standing in the report.

Ivanova was approved as Bulgaria's representative to ECA at the end of November 2024 by the European Parliament with a large majority, receiving 581 votes in favour, 34 against, and 31 abstentions. As stipulated in the EU Treaty, each country nominates a candidate for ECA membership, and the Council of the European Union, after consulting the European Parliament, adopts the list of representatives for a six-year term.

Ivanova's term as European Commissioner ends with the election of the new European Commission. She was a Member of the European Parliament from GERB/EPP (2009-2012), represented Bulgaria in ECA from 2013 to 2023, and was then approved as European Commissioner until the end of Mariya Gabriel's term.
