Vice President Iliana Iotova, who is on a two-day visit to Romania, opened an exhibition titled "80 Years Since the Rescue of Bulgarian Jews in Documents from the Collection of the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library". The exhibition is staged at the National Opera House in Bucharest, whose opening was also attended by its General Manager Daniel Jinga, Bulgarian Ambassador to Romania Radko Vlaykov, and the Israeli Ambassador to Romania, Reuven Azar.
"The exhibition is made of archival materials and can be divided into two parts - one traces the thousand-year history of the Jewish community in our lands in Bulgaria, the second is dedicated to the feat of ordinary Bulgarians, the Bulgarian State, Bulgarian politicians and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church for saving Bulgarian Jews," Iotova said.
"In order for the years of the Second World War and the Holocaust never to be repeated again, this history must be known and today's exhibition is part of this knowledge," the Bulgarian Vice President added.
"You might ask why don't we close this black and dark page and move on. There is no way we can move on, because today all those efforts to prove that there was no Holocaust, that there were no crimes against humanity, are not harmless at all, but dangerous, and these voices are emerging nowadays in radical movements and parties in Europe. Anti-Semitic movements and manifestations are still leaving their shameful mark on our societies and our lives," Iliana Iotova said.
The officials and guests at the event together viewed the exhibition, which includes 22 bilingual panels.
