105 STATISTICS - FATAL ROAD ACCIDENTS

Bulgaria Records Highest
Fatal Road Accident Rate in EU
for Passenger Cars - Eurostat

August 21 (BTA) - In the EU Member States, Bulgaria ranks highest in the passenger car category with 64 deaths in road traffic accidents per million inhabitants (2016 data), which is almost six times the lowest rate, that of Malta (11, also 2016 data), Eurostat reported in an analysis of fatal road accidents in 2017.

The average rate for the EU is 23 deaths per million inhabitants.

Broken down by category of vehicles, road accident fatalities in Bulgaria in 2016 numbered 708 (456 for passenger cars, 5 for buses and coaches, 35 for bicycles, 118 for pedestrians and 86 involving other motorised vehicles), Eurostat said.

Bulgaria's Interior Ministry reports that nearly half of the fatal road accidents are due to head-on collisions between vehicles, which makes this the principal cause of death among road users.

In the first half of 2019, 254 Bulgarians were killed and 3,653 others were injured in nearly 3,000 road traffic accidents, which translates as an average of 42 road accident fatalities and some 250 accidents monthly. IG/LG
