August 22 (BTA) - A total of 1,219,800 residents of Bulgaria aged 15 and over made tourist trips in the second quarter of 2019, according to preliminary data released by the National Statistical Institute on Thursday. The majority (75.7 per cent) travelled only within the country, 19.1 per cent traveled only abroad, and 5.2 per cent traveled both within the country and abroad. Compared to the same quarter of 2018, the total number of travellers aged 15 and over increased by 12.4 per cent.

Most Bulgarians who traveled in the second quarter of 2019 were aged between 25 and 44: 548,000 or 44.9 per cent of the total. Trips within the country predominated in all age groups, and the highest share in this respect was among people aged 65 and over: 78.0 per cent. The share of trips abroad was highest in the 25-44 age group: 19.9 per cent.

The majority of tourist trips made by persons aged 15 and over both within the country (46.2 per cent) and abroad (78.4 per cent) were for holiday and recreation.

In the second quarter of 2019, 1,485,500 or 89.2 per cent of the total number of individual tourist trips were registered as non-package. The share of non-package trips without booking was 94.2 per cent within the country and 68.5 per cent abroad.

In the structure of expenditure by type, expenditure on food took up the largest share, 37.8 per cent, in domestic trips, while expenditure on transport was the largest spending item in outbound trips: 29.0 per cent. In the second quarter of 2019, a person aged 15 and over spent an average of 198.34 leva on a private trip within the country and 658.74 leva on a private trip abroad. At the same time, the average expenditure per person on a professional trip was 168.82 leva on a domestic trip and 1,198.35 leva on an outbound trip. IG/LG
