Transport Minister Moskovski Approaches Transport Commissioner Bulc for Assistance in Letting Through Bulgarian Lorries through Blocked Greek Border

Sofia, February 9 (BTA) - Transport, IT and Communications Minister Ivailo Moskovski has approached European Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc for assistance in connection with the situation at the Bulgarian-Greek border which is blocked by protesting Greek farmers, Moskovski's Ministry said in a press release. On Tuesday the Bulgarian Transport Minister sent an official letter to Bulc in which he expressed Bulgaria's serious concern over the lengthy delays of lorries at the border checkpoints between Bulgaria and Greece.

Moskovski also informed Bulc that the unlawful acts of the Greek border authorities lead to considerable economic damages to the Bulgarian road hauliers who incur indemnities due to delays in delivering goods, including  perishable ones.

Moskovski stressed that the closure of the border creates serious impediments to the free movement of goods and people, so that Bulgaria insists on ensuring at least one open corridor for the passage of Bulgarian lorries to and via the territory of Greece. Moskovski also requested Bulc's assistance for reminding the competent Greek authorities that the situation at the border affects basic EU rights and fundamental principles of the Single Market, with all consequences arising from this for the violation of these rights, in line with the provisions of Council Regulation (EC) No. 2679/98 on the functioning of the internal market in relation to the free movement of goods among the Member States.
