Lufthansa's Flagship Airbus A380 to Make First  Landing in Sofia on Oct 16

Sofia, October 5 (BTA) - Lufthansa Regional Director for Bulgaria Alexander Tolweth told a news conference in Sofia on Wednesday that the carrier's flagship, the Airbus A380, will land in the Bulgarian capital for the first time on October 16.

The Lufthansa aircraft will arrive from Frankfurt and will have a four-hour layover in Sofia.

The landing of the 509-seat Airbus A380, the world's largest and heaviest passenger aircraft, will coincide with the local observance of the Aviation and Air Force Day.

Sofia Airport Executive Director Hristo Shterionov said the airport has the capabilities to cater to airliners of A380's size. Sofia is the backup airport for the large-fuselage aircraft of this type operated by Emirates, Shterionov said, adding that the Dubai-based carrier has already tested it for emergency landing.

Lufthansa currently operates a fleet of 14 A380s.
