Prosecutor General Submits 2016 Activity Report of Prosecution Service to Supreme Judicial Council

Sofia, May 11 (BTA) - Bulgaria's Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov has submitted the 2016 Activity Report of the Prosecuting Magistracy to the Supreme Judicial Council, the prosecution service said in a press release on Thursday.

At 95.6 per cent, the disposed of case files as a share of the supervised case files is steadily large. The report notes a substantial increase in summary and immediate proceedings, a growth of the prosecutorial instruments submitted to court, a certain decline in the number of accused parties committed for trial, and a reduced number of terminated and suspended proceedings.

The number of persons convicted and sanctioned by an enforceable judicial instrument remains large, while fewer persons are acquitted by an enforceable judicial instrument, the prosecuting magistracy points out.

The prosecution service remains beset by problems identified in previous periods: difficulties in finding experts and in resourcing them, providing proper physical working conditions for magistrates and court officers, certain deficiencies in the qualification of the investigating authorities, etc.

Yet again, the prosecuting magistracy notes the need to improve and update substantive and procedural criminal law as an important prerequisite for raising the quality of the administration of criminal justice.

The full text of the report has been published on the Internet site of the prosecution service.
