Bulgarian Judges Association
Support Judge Panov
for his Speech in MEDEL Conference

Sofia, November 27 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Judges Association (BJA) declared full support for Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC) President Lozan Panov in relation to a speech he held on November 16 at a conference of the European Magistrates for Democracy and Liberty (MEDEL), the association reported on Tuesday.

In his speech on November 16, Panov accused Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov of persecuting his critics and protecting his friends. The SCC President explained that this is just one of the factors that show the judicial system in Bulgaria is fraught with dependencies. Panov's claims caused a strong reaction and various public comments.

According to the BJA, Panov's speech did not pursue any political purposes, but rather displayed his position as a judge and SCC President on the increasingly frequent cases of jeopardizing the rule of law in Bulgaria. The association also noted they will inform MEDEL and the European Networks of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ) of the situation in the country.
