August 27 (BTA) - The GERB party and the Union of
Democratic Forces (UDF) signed a political agreement Tuesday to
run jointly in the upcoming October local elections.

UDF leader Rumen Hristov noted that this is a natural
continuation to the successful joint European elections
campaign. "The goal is to turn this political alliance into the
main political power, with the most mayors and municipal
councilors in the country" said Hristov.

Bulgarian Prime Minister and leader of the GERB party, Boyko
Borissov, noted that it is no coincidence that membership in the
European People's Party (EPP) "requires that you choose among
the political parties that are from that family accordingly".
"Thank you for agreeing that in larger cities we are simply
obliged to nominate GERB candidates, while in towns like
Karlovo, Krivodol we will gladly support the candidates you have
raised," said Borissov to the UDF.

Borissov argued that, when it comes to the capital, the upcoming
elections will be particularly "sneaky" because of the
Bulgarian Socialist Party's practice to "attach themselves to a
candidate, and to claim that candidate as theirs after a win".
"If our colleagues from the left want to fight a political
battle with us, they should first raise their own candidate,"
said Borissov.

"The union of the old and the new right is not only necessary,
but also very important, because in this way we respond to
belligerent populism with realism, responsibility and with the
desire to continue the change in Bulgarian municipalities,"
commented current Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova RY/DT
