A total of 73 kg of cocaine worth over BGN 13 million have been found on a ship at one of Burgas' ports. No one has been detained yet, Burgas District Prosecutor Georgi Chinev told journalists here on Monday. The drugs are worth many times more on the free market, he specified.
On Sunday, the Interior Ministry reported that cocaine worth USD 7 million was found on a ship with a capacity of 15 thousand metric tonnes that had arrived at Burgas Port from Peru with a crew of 11, who have all been detained.
The Border Police head in Burgas, Chief Commissioner Lachezar Momchev, said at Monday's news briefing that on December 13, information was received that a ship from Spain wishes to hand over dangerous cargo at one of Burgas' ports. Before dropping anchor in Spain, the shop was in Chile and Peru. During an onboard check with a trained dog, cocaine was found in a cooling tube of the ship's engine. Some of the drugs are wet, so the total weight cannot be specified, Momchev explained.
The crew of 22 are nationals of the Philippines, it transpired during the briefing. All have been questioned. The information about the ship was submitted to the authorities by an individual connected to the ship's activity, Chinev said. That is how the authorities learned of the presence of prohibited substances onboard. The ship has not been seized, he specified.
