The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has detected a primary outbreak of sheep pox in the village of Polkovnik Zhelyazovo, in Kardzhali Region. The disease was detected on a farm with 156 sheep, the regulator reported Thursday.

A 3-kilometre protection zone around the outbreak has been defined.

A 10-km surveillance zone around the outbreak has been established, which includes the villages of Dzhanka, Kovil, Kachulka, Doborsko, Pelin, Perunika, Bagriltsi, Chal, Guliyka, Chernooki, Podrumche, Kalajdjievo, Golyamo Kamenyane, Malko Kamenyane, Gulia, Kuklica, Skalak, Zvonarka, Khrastovo, Kandilka, Sarnak, Oreh, Lulichka, Gorna Kula, Vransko, Zlatolist, Dolna Kula, Baratsi and Hisar around Krumovgrad, and the villages of Sindeltsi, Karamfil and Chaika around Momchilgrad.

The owner has fully cooperated. Measures have been taken to control and eradicate the disease in accordance with the rules of European and national legislation - humane killing and disposal of all infected and contact small ruminants on the premises.

The disease does not pose a danger to humans, but if it spreads, it will cause significant economic damage.
