In 2023, the average annual salary of employees under employment and service contracts in Sofia region was BGN 34,262 and the unemployment rate was 2.7%. The relative share of the population aged between 25 and 64 with higher education was 54.1%. This is shown in a study by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) "Characteristics of the state of the regions in 2023", published on Thursday. Overall, the country's average annual salary was BGN 24,485.
The lowest annual salary was in the regions of Blagoevgrad - BGN 15, 999, Kyustendil - BGN 16, 205, Haskovo - BGN 16, 344 and Vidin - BGN 16, 402.
The output of non-financial enterprises in Sofia was worth BGN 111.751 billion, and the largest share - 92.7% - was contributed by enterprises with up to 9 employees. Foreign direct investment in non-financial enterprises as of December 31, 2023 was EUR 17.333 billion.
In the capital in 2023, there were 155 places of accommodation, where 2,185,868 overnight stays were made, while in 2019 their number was 1,998,155.
At the end of each year, the NSI publishes a set of key indicators characterizing the demographic, social and economic development of Bulgaria's districts. The topics reflected in the set of indicators include - demographic statistics, labour market, health, education, investment, non-financial enterprises, transport, research and development, information society, housing, tourism.
Data are available for the period 2019 to 2023 on the NSI website under "Regional Statistics" and for previous years can be downloaded from the INFOSTAT information system.
