Parliament adopted on second reading the 2024 budget bill for the State Social Insurance (SSI). It provides for an increase by 11% of all pensions granted until the end of 2023, valid as of  July 1.

From the same date, the minimum retirement pension (for full retirement) will increase from BGN 523 to BGN 580. The maximum amount of one or more pensions will remain at BGN 3,400. The social pension for old age will increase to BGN 307.

In 2024, BGN 21.6 billion is earmarked for the payment of all types of pensions and pension supplements. The planned expenditure is BGN 2.440 billion, or 12.7 per cent more than in 2023.  

As of 1 January 2024, the minimum social security income for self-employed persons, farmers and tobacco growers increases from BGN 780 to BGN 933. 

Also from July 1, 2024, survivor benefits will increase from the current 26.5% to 30% of the pension received by the deceased spouse.

The maximum daily unemployment benefit is increased from BGN 85.71 to BGN 107.14.

The first two days of a sick leave will be paid for by the employer and from the third day and on will be paid for by the State Social Insurance. Until now, employers had to pay the first three days of a worker's sick leave.
