A total of 151,600 people were registered as employed in high-technology sectors in Bulgaria in 2022, according to the latest data from the European statistical office Eurostat, published Monday on the agency's website. Southwest and South-Central Bulgaria was leader in this indicator among the regions in the country (123,100 people).

In the same year, some 9.8 million people in the European Union were employed in high-technology sectors (4.8% of all EU workers), which is considered one of the main drivers of economic growth and presents good opportunities for high-paying jobs.

Two regions in the EU - Ile-de-France (420,000 people) in France and the Spanish capital region of Madrid (289,000 people) - register the highest number of employees in this sector in the EU.

They are followed by three regions with over 200,000 people in high-tech occupations: Oberbayern in Southern Germany, Lombardy in Northern Italy and Catalonia in Spain.

The regions in the EU with the fewest people employed in the high-tech sector (less than 3,000) are Molise in Southern Italy and the Greek regions of Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, Peloponnese, Epirus and Central Greece.

Men represented the majority (67.2%) of those employed in the high-tech sector, while women accounted for 32.8% of these professionals in 2022.

The highest proportion of women with occupations in the high-tech sector was in the Hungarian region of Western Transdanubia (50.2%) and the lowest - in the Greek region of Thessaly (8.3%).
