The gross external debt amounted to just over EUR 43 billion (45% of  the forecast GDP), by nearly EUR 1.4 billion (3.3%) more than in end-August 2022, the Bulgarian National Bank reported Monday. Th general government's gross external debt totalled EUR 9,357.5 million (9.8% of GDP), growing by EUR 2,152.5 million (29.9%) from the like period of 2022.

Short-term liabilities equaled EUR 7,338.9 million (17% of the total debt, 7.7% of GDP), dropping by EUR 678.7 million (8.5%) from end-August 2022.  Long-term liabilities totaled EUR 35,705.4 million (83% of the total debt, 37.4% of GDP) at end-August 2023, up by EUR 2,069.5 million (6.2%) from end-August 2022.

The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 2,096.8 million (2.2% of GDP), increasing by EUR 77 million (3.8%) from end-August 2022.

The external liabilities of other monetary financial institutions totaled EUR 5,690.1 million (6% of GDP), growing by EUR 194.8 million (3.5%) from
end-August 2022.

The external liabilities of other sectors stood at EUR 11,878.2 million (12.4% of GDP), dropping by EUR 1,126.4 million (8.7%) from end-August 2022. 

The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 14,021.7 million (14.7% of GDP) at end-August 2023, growing by EUR 92.9 million (0.7%) from the like period of 2022. It held the largest share in external debt, equating to 32.6% at end-August 2023, compared with 33.4% at end-August 2022.
