Minister of Culture Nayden Todorov awarded Professor Lyudmil Vagalinski Monday with a Guardian of Heritage certificate for his significant contributions to the exploration of the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica near Petrich (Southwestern Bulgaria).

"The excavations by Prof. Vagalinski are rewriting history," Todorov said at the ceremony. "Heraclea Sintica has been known to us for 22 years, and archaeological research at the site has been ongoing for 17 years," he added.

Petrich Mayor Dimitar Brachkov praised Vagalinski's efforts, saying: "When it comes to Heraclea Sintica, we have indeed come a long way. All of this has been possible thanks to the diligent work of Prof. Vagalinski and his team."

In his remarks, Vagalinski hinted at further discoveries: "The most interesting part of Heraclea Sintica is yet to come, provided we stay healthy and continue working together—municipality, archaeologists, media, and museum. Thank you for this recognition."

The meeting, themed Brand Struma Valley, was organized by the Cultural Heritage Society, the media outlet Standard, and the Municipality of Petrich. It brought together key figures, including Deputy Minister of Tourism Pavlin Petrov, Regional Governor Georgi Dinev, and the mayors of Petrich, Sandanski, Razlog, and Simitli.

Heraclea Sintica: A Center of Global Attention

The ancient city of Heraclea Sintica has gained international recognition following the recent discoveries by Prof. Vagalinski's team. A unique marble statue was unearthed in the summer, followed by a second statue discovered on September 20.

Vagalinski’s team continues to uncover more about this ancient city, which has seen a surge in tourist interest. Over 25,000 visitors have explored the site in less than six months.

Both statues, noted for their exceptional craftsmanship, have reinforced the cultural and historical significance of Heraclea Sintica, drawing attention to ongoing archaeological efforts in the Struma Valley.
