Spending money and time on preventive measures and educating all stakeholders about the processes in the environment - this is one of the recommendations for the protection of sand dunes in Bulgaria made by Luigi Cipriani, geomorphology expert at the Directorate of Soil Conservation and Civil Protection in Italy's Tuscany region, to Bulgarian authorities. He told BTA that it was important to make people aware of the richness of Bulgarian nature in order to make them a partner in protecting the coast.

According to him, this is exactly what is being done in Italy. Sardinia is one of the places with the most impressive dunes, Cipriani said. In Tuscany there are protected regional parks and all construction is prohibited, he added.

The conditions for dune conservation in Italy were shared with representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Water and the scientific community in a two-day discussion held in Sofia last week. The Bulgarian experts were also introduced to the Spanish experience, presented by Roberto Diaz Sanchez, coastal expert at Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

"I was surprised that we have such common problems regarding dune conservation. In our country they are related to ownership, for example," the Spanish expert said. There are problems of coordination between the different competent authorities on what to do to avoid dune erosion, he added. He mentioned Maspalomas as one of the places with beautiful sand dunes as well as El Puntal beach near Santander.

The foreign experts have been familiarised with the methodology for mapping, delimitation and type identification of sand dunes, approved by the Minister of Environment and Water at the end of January. They told BTA that the document provides a good basis for dune conservation.
