The Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation (BBF) has declared 2024 as the Year of the Live Sands. BBF Executive Bureau Member Radostina Tzenova told Wednesday BTA that the initiative "The Year of..." dates back to 2003 and each year is dedicated to a particular protected species or territories. A thematic calendar is published, which includes photos and information on the topic. The Foundation organizes exhibitions and thematic events for children and adults.
Tzenova added that the Year of the Living Sands calendar has already been printed and contains photographs of beautiful landscapes of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, where the last pieces of live sands in the country have been preserved. The texts present the types of dunes, how they originated, what threatens them, as well as their typical inhabitants - birds, amphibians, reptiles and plants. Funds from the purchase of the calendars will be used to support conservation, legal, information and education activities for dunes in Bulgaria.
BB hopes to raise BGN 10,000 to put up restrictive fencing, to build and place wooden gratings, information boards, and to reinforce the dunes with typical plant species.
The Foundation explained that the dunes are one of the most valuable habitats and an oasis of biodiversity at the border between sea and land. There are several types of dunes in Bulgaria. These are incipient mobile dunes, mobile white dunes, fixed dunes with grass vegetation, also called grey dunes, and forested dunes. Preserving them together with the depressions in between is important for their conservation.
