The main stages in the development of the Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition were outlined by Bulgarian Ambassador to Buenos Aires Stoyan Mihailov to Paola Di Chiarai, head of the Argentine Foreign Affairs Ministry Island Secretariat. The two underscored the longstanding friendship between Bulgaria and Argentina, which is at the bottom of excellent cooperation, said the Bulgarian Embassy in Buenos Aires on its Facebook page.

Mihailov thanked Argentina for its selfless support through the years. The inclusion of the Bulgarian research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii in the expedition opens new prospects for cooperation in areas such as science, training, logistics and between different geographical regions such as the twinning of the cities Varna and Mar del Plata.

The twinning of the two cities lays the foundations for the development of close relations between local authorities, research centres and businesses from both sides of the ocean.

During the talk Mihailov noted the contribution of Argentina for the successful implementation of the first Antarctic voyage of Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii. He said that the Bulgarian defence minister awarded two Argentine naval officers Rear Admiral Marcelo Tarapow and Lieutenant Commander Juan Nicolau.

For her part Paola di Chiaro said that Argentina’s support for the Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition is part of the overall policy of the country for sustainable contribution to the Antarctic through the increasingly closer and more active cooperation with other countries. She said that she views the model of joint work between Bulgaria and Argentina as an example of success and is willing to apply it to other partners. Di Chiaro assured that Bulgaria can rely in the future on Argentina’s support in the Antarctic.

At the end of the meeting Mihailov congratulated Di Chiaro on on her appointment to the post on December 13 and assured her that the Bulgarian Embassy will remain partner. Di Chiaro is a member of the team of the new minister for foreign affairs, international trade and worship Diana Mondino.
