The Executive Board of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) asked Thursday urgent amendments to the country's election legislation to guarantee to the Bulgarian citizen that every vote is important and that every vote is fairly counted. The statement came after earlier in the day the Constitutional Court ruled that the 16 MPs in the 51st National Assembly were unlawfully elected on October 27, 2024.

The document, distributed by the socialists' press centre, also says that any political destabilisation is dangerous, can interrupt real efforts to solve acute social problems and calls for reason and responsibility of all participants in the political process.

The entry of a new political entity into Parliament and the redrawing of the seats in the National Assembly will require efforts to implement the framework set by the joint Government, the party wrote. "We warn that both extreme populism hidden behind the mask of 'man of the people' and extreme foreignism masked behind democratic values are dangerous at such a time," the BSP added.

"We also warn that there can be no normal governance through the methods of the street or by taking them to parliament. This is particularly important in view of the strategic decisions and actions that lie ahead, both geopolitically and in terms of the country's financial stability. Unfortunately, we must also note another open danger. Following the Constitutional Court's ruling, the knot of public doubts about the purity and transparency of the electoral process has not been firmly untied," the statement reads.
