An exhibition entitled Builders of the Freedom Monument was opened in the Lom History Museum, the museum said here on Thursday.
Visitors can see the history of the construction of the Shipka Monument on 27 panels, which show photographs and facsimiles of documents and correspondence. The exhibition tells the story of the difficulties that engineers and builders overcame in the construction of the monument on Shipka Peak (formerly St Nicholas Peak), as well as the history of the monument to its opening day.
The proposal to build a monument of freedom on St Nicholas Peak in the Balkan Mountains was made in the Constituent Assembly in 1879 by MPs Petko Slaveykov and Stefan Beron, with the decision accepted in 1920. The foundation stone was laid on August 24, 1922, and construction was completed in 1930. The monument was solemnly opened on August 26, 1934 by Boris III.
The Builders of the Freedom Monument is a joint exhibition provided by the Shipka - Buzludzha National Park-Museum, together with the National Military History Museum, the Targovishte State Archives and the Kazanlak Art Gallery. It can be seen until May 5.
