During an official visit to London on Wednesday, Bulgarian Vice President Iliana Iotova conferred with London Statutory Deputy Mayor Joanne McCartney, the head of State’s press secretariat said. McCartney is also London Deputy Mayor for Children and Families.

The two sides discussed the challenges facing the integration of a significant portion of the Bulgarian community, which is one of the largest in Greater London. Due to low or no education, illiteracy, and a lack of English language skills, a large part of the Bulgarian community remains isolated and does not integrate into the local environment. "We must work to ensure that children are included in the education system. They need to understand that they can only be successful if they are educated. This will help them find jobs instead of relying solely on the UK’s social system," said Iotova.

Many Bulgarians face difficulties in obtaining the EU Settlement Scheme status, which has been required since the UK left the European Union. This status provides access to healthcare, social benefits, and the labour market.

The Vice President was in London for the unveiling of the Bulgarian stand at the London Book Fair. For the second consecutive year, Bulgaria is participating in the event. At the invitation of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in London, the Bulgarian participation is under the patronage of Iotova.
