Wreaths and flowers were laid here at the Monument of the Fallen Medic on Wednesday in memory of the more than 500 medics who died in the Liberation War 147 years ago in the battles of Pleven, Plovdiv, the village of Mechka, and Shipka Peak. The ceremony on the occasion of the anniversary of the Liberation of Bulgaria was organized by the Bulgarian Red Cross.

A thanksgiving service was held. Wreaths and flowers were presented on behalf of President Rumen Radev, Vice President Iliana Iotova, Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov, Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, Health Minister Silvi Kirilov, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov, Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, Labour Minister Borislav Gutsanov, among others.

Iotova expressed gratitude to the medics who put their lives on the line and were killed. In her speech, she said: "Today, the theme of war and peace has once again entered into our lives [...], and it is worth reflecting, on days like today, on the message of those who entrusted us with their words and their understanding and their values about the world. How many of them have we remembered, and how many have we remained faithful to?"

The head of the Bulgarian Red Cross, Acad. Hristo Grigorov, said: "We are here once again to pay tribute to all those who died and brought us freedom - 551 doctors, pharmacists, nurses, good Samaritans."
