“The common political will as well as the potential of the economies of our two countries are important prerequisites for the upward development of relations,” President Rumen Radev said during a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador here Do Hoang Long and representatives of the leadership of the Vietnamese Association in Bulgaria, which was established in 2006 and numbers about 2,000 people, said Radev’s press secretariat.

Vietnamese citizens in Bulgaria, as well as those who have studied and worked in the country, can count on support from the Bulgarian side for their endeavours to promote bilateral contacts and strengthen the friendship between Bulgaria and Vietnam, Radev said.

The meeting was held on the back of an official visit of head of State Rumen Radev to Vietnam in November 2024, and in the light of the celebration sin 2025 of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Bulgarian-Vietnamese diplomatic relations.

The President noted the warm welcome he and the delegation he led received in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as the fruitful results of the visit, during which meetings were held at the highest State level and a number of steps were agreed to build on the pragmatic and effective cooperation between Bulgaria and Vietnam, including through the signing of bilateral documents.

Ambassador Do Hoang Long commended the President's commitment to further develop Bulgarian-Vietnamese relations and stressed the Vietnamese community's readiness to further contribute in this regard.

During the talks, they discussed the possibilities for further development of cooperation in the field of culture, educational and trade exchange, business, consular services, logistics. Meetings with competent Bulgarian institutions will also be held in this regard. 

February 8 marked the 75th anniversary of the establishment (1950) of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Vietnam at the level of legations. On November 25 1956 relations between the two countries were upgraded to the rank of embassies. 

Under an intergovernmental agreement of 1980, 35,000 Vietnamese citizens worked in Bulgaria for a period of 10 years, and 5,000 completed their higher education in Bulgaria. Vietnamese graduates in Bulgaria have subsequently found employment in Vietnam, where they hold important positions in the country's business and state administration. They are a prerequisite and a solid foundation for building up bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Vietnam. Currently, about 1,200 Vietnamese live and work in Bulgaria.
