At an election campaign event in the village of Sumer on Saturday, Vazrazhdane’s top-of-the-list candidate in Montana, Petar Petrov, promised to prevent a potential disposal of nuclear waste in the Montana Region, the party's press centre said.

Petrov said that the village faces a major concern regarding "the potential construction of a nuclear waste repository for storing spent US nuclear fuel from the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant". He added that following sanctions, Russia no longer accepts spent nuclear fuel, which is currently stored at the Kozloduy NPP site. The government's plans, in line with European requirements, involve building a repository to store the waste on Bulgarian territory, Petrov said.

According to Petrov, responding to his inquiry, the Energy Minister had not ruled out the possibility of constructing the repository in the Montana Region. There is also a potential for it to accept nuclear waste from other neighboring countries' power plants. The Minister confirmed that such a facility would be built in northern Bulgaria, and reports from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences suggest that the village of Sumer is the most suitable location for this purpose, Petrov said. He expressed strong opposition to the project being implemented in Montana or anywhere else in the country.
