Bulgarian President Rumen Radev commented Monday on road safety issues that have sparked countrywide protests against road fatalities in the past week. “Bulgaria is in mourning again. Unfortunately, children are now falling victim to road conditions. There is a very important reason for that, and I believe that is negligence caused by impunity,” Radev said.

“Roads are in a dire condition,” he said and added that Bulgaria has no highways.

“Now, we are being convinced that we have to endure this outrage, because we need stability, to introduce the euro. If we do not have rule of law, the only difference after we introduce the European currency will be that those who stole our levs will now be stealing euro,” Radev said.

The President attended the festive opening of Forest Week. The head of State and Bulgaria’s Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan, Daniil, planted a tree.

The celebration of the 100th anniversary of Forest Week took place outside St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia, on April 7, 2025.
