Bulgaria will join the Opre Roma campaign, launched by the Council of Europe, with a cultural event of national importance on April 8, International Roma Day, the government information service said.

An exhibition, entitled "Roma Literature and Culture - Part of Bulgarian Culture Wealth" will be unveiled at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library.

The exhibition is organized by the National Council for Cooperation on Ethnic and Integration Issues at the Council of Ministers in partnership with the National Library and presents little-known but significant pages of Roma literature and culture in Bulgaria.

The event is held under the auspices of Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Council Atanas Zafirov.

From 1 to 30 April, the Council of Europe is marking Opre Roma! month, dedicated to celebrating the rich contributions of Roma history, language, and culture to Europe’s shared heritage and cultural diversity. The phrase Opre Roma!, meaning “Stand up, Roma!” in English, was a call prominently mentioned during the 1st International Romani Congress in 1971. It continues to inspire unity and resilience within Roma communities today.

Throughout April, more than 30 member states will host national awareness-raising events to highlight Roma history, language, and cultural identity. Many of these events will also focus on promoting and protecting the rights of Roma communities.
