The 13th European Forum of Social and Solidarity Economy Subjects opened in Sofia Monday. Addressing the participants, Vice President Iliana Iotova emphasized the need for the state to pay more attention and create conditions for the development of worker producers' cooperatives.
"In a time when the world focuses more on weapons and debates how to develop industries in the arms sector, cooperatives represent the counterpoint to this discourse," Iotova said.
The Vice President noted that cooperatives today are not fading away but are growing and finding their place. "The cooperative movement is the good example we need today, from which we should draw wisdom," she added.
Iotova described cooperatives as "an economy by people, for people". She emphasized that the forum is particularly important as it coincides with the International Year of Cooperatives, with this year's motto being "Cooperatives Build a Better World."
