Attending a topical discussion titled "The Cost of Non-Membership of Schengen for the Single Market: Impact on Bulgaria and Romania" in Sofia on Tuesday, Hungary's Ambassador to Bulgaria Miklos Boros underscored that Hungary supports Bulgaria and Romania’s fully-fledged Schengen membership. The event was organized by the Bulgarian Industrial Association and the European Economic and Social Committee.

Boros stressed that Hungary currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union and during this term his country will do everything possible to find a solution regarding the abolition of border controls for Bulgaria and Romania by land.

The Hungarian Ambassador recalled that his country has been a member of Schengen since 2007. The effect of joining Schengen was not immediately visible - in 2008, there was a financial crisis, and it was not clear what the result was, he said and explained that later Hungary benefitted by diversifying its trade and getting more opportunities by having access to the Western market.

Hungary's accession to Schengen provided for a more stable supply chain, Boros said, adding that there was also an increase in foreign direct investment which led to an improvement in the competitiveness of Hungarian companies.
