Acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov asked the Inspectorate of the Supreme Prosecution Office to conduct a comprehensive review of the work of prosecutor Dimitar Petrov of the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO) in the period from June 30, 2021, to June 28, 2024. The request follows numerous negative reports in the media concerning Petrov's methods, the Prosecution of the Republic of Bulgaria (PRB) said in a press release on Monday.

The leadership of SCPO and PRB distance themselves and find it wrong and unacceptable that Petrov intervened in pretrial proceedings in a case initiated in May. The administrative leaders of SCPO and PRB have said on more than one occasion that they do not intervene in the work of supervising prosecutors, the press release said.

The requested review of Petrov's performance over the last three years should cover delayed, suspended or discontinued pretrial proceedings, refusals to institute pretrial proceedings, case files that are still open, cases referred to court, "not guilty" verdicts, workload issues, and alerts about suspected disciplinary offences.

The findings of the review will be published in a report which may warrant disciplinary measures.
