Only four EU Member States - the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden - have submitted on time their final plans for achieving the EU's goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, an European Commission (EC) Spokesperson told a news conference here on Monday. The Commission calls on the other Member States to comply with their legal obligation and send their plans without further delays, otherwise the EC may take legal measures against them.

The Member States had until Monday to submit their plans for achieving the EU's target of reducing carbon emissions to at least 55% below their 1990 levels by 2030.

The timely submission of the national plans is related to the provision of the necessary investments for the removal of carbon pollution from EU production and the provision of an accessible, secure, and pure energy, the Spokesperson said. He specified that the Commission needs a sufficient number of plans to assess whether they achieve the targets set for reducing carbon pollution. In his words, only Austria has requested an extension of the deadline for the plan's submission.
