site.btaUPDATED Sofia Municipal Council's Leadership Problem Still Unresolved
No final solution was agreed on Sofia Municipal Council's problems at Thursday's meeting, political groups commented. The meeting was organized by councillors Vili Lilkov from the KOD Coalition and Carlos Contrera from VMRO in a bid to break the deadlock in the Council, which still has not elected a chairperson after the October 29 local elections, KOD said on December 22.
The Municipal Council failed to elect a chairperson in its fifth attempt on December 18.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the largest group, Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria - Save Sofia; the second largest, GERB; KOD; There Is Such a People; and Carlos Contrera. BSP for Bulgaria and Vazrazhdane did not participate in it.
Vili Lilkov explained this was the first time that most political groups had gathered together. He said many questions were still outstanding but was optimistic that the Sofia Municipal Council would find a solution at its next meeting on January 11. Lilkov said the councillors would spare no effort to avoid new elections.
On Thursday, most participants agreed that a temporary chairperson could be elected until the budget of the municipality is adopted.
