The world:

- International Day of Roma Women;

- National Day of Portugal: death of national poet Luis de Camoes in 1580.

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1954: Union of Bulgarian Filmmakers established.

1962: Diplomatic relations established with Ceylon (Sri Lanka since 1972).

1990: Elections held to 7th Grand National Assembly. First democratic elections after nearly 45 years of communist rule.

2004: BTC licensed as Bulgaria's third GSM mobile phone operator.

JUNE 11

Bulgaria:

- Economists' Day.

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1966: Union of Jurists in Bulgaria is established.   

1974: Diplomatic relations with Mexico restored at embassy level.  

1990: Students from the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia go on an occupation stike, which grows into a nationwide one. The strike is called off on July 7, 1990.

1999: Diplomatic relations established with The Gambia.  

2004: Privatization of the Bulgarian Telecommunications Company is completed.
