After several days of near-summer temperatures, the weather in Romania is changing drastically in some regions. A yellow weather alert for heavy rains, storms, and hail is in effect on Wednesday for Oltenia, Banat, Crisana, Maramures, most of Transylvania, and northwestern Wallachia, the country’s National Meteorological Service reports on Wednesday. In some areas, wind gusts may reach up to 60 km/h.
The weather in Bucharest is also unstable and a heavy downpour and thunderstorms hit the capital on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Agriculture said that the National Anti-Hail System won't be put back in operation after it was suspended in 2024. The Ministry cites several reasons for its decision, including the lack of approved rocket launch points. The suspension of the hail protection system was also requested by farmers’ associations which blame drought affecting their regions on the use of anti-hail rockets. The Ministry said there is no study to confirm a link between atmospheric interventions and drought.
The Ministry is exploring alternative solutions for hail control, including helium balloons.
