Diplomats of the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje, representatives of the Bulgarian Culture and Information Centre and members of the Bulgarian community in North Macedonia laid flowers in front of Vasil Levski's bas relief at the Embassy building here on Wednesday, marking the 125th anniversary of the death of Bulgaria's national hero.
The bas relief is a replica of the bas relief at the Vasil Levski Monument in Sofia.
Addressing the commemoration, Bulgaria's Ambassador to North Macedonia Zhelyazko Radukov said that Levski sacrificed his brief but remarkable life for the freedom of his mother country. "On this day we realize that we are still struggling to achieve his ideal of a 'pure and sacred republic', that freedom is not a definitive notion but a constant endeavour, that his lifework is unfinished and we are duty-bound to continue it. What is demanded from us is far less than what was demanded from him. It would be a shame if we fail to translate his ideal into reality," Radukov pointed out.
Carrying on the remembrance, on Wednesday afternoon, the Bulgarian Culture and Information Centre will host a visiting exhibition from the Regional History Museum in Lovech (North Central Bulgaria) and a performance about Levski staged by children attending the Zdravey Saturday and Sunday School.
