Thousands swarmed University Square in downtown Bucharest on Thursday evening to hold a rally mottoed “For Europe.” They waved Romanian and EU flags and chanted “Europe” and “Freedom.” A sign on a collapsible stage read: “Romania, remain.” The EU logo stood there as well.

A woman carried a white paper dove, the symbol of peace. Many people came with their families, there were many children.

Tight security was in place.

Many civil society activists joined the demonstration, among them the founders of a children’s cancer hospital built entirely on donations.
