Turkiye's goal of reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere to zero by 2053 can only be achieved through nuclear energy, Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said, as quoted by the Turkish Milliyet newspaper.
He reiterated that in the next 20 years Turkiye plans to build three nuclear power plants with four reactors each.
Bayraktar noted that 12 reactors must be built - in Akkuyu, Sinop and Thrace. Turkiye has no chance of reducing its harmful emissions to zero by 2053 without nuclear power, the Energy Minister told Milliyet.
He added that in fact there are not many companies in the world that build nuclear power plants, and therefore countries to negotiate with on the issue.
According to him, among these countries are Russia, China and South Korea.
The first Akkuyu nuclear power plant is currently being built by the Russian company Rosatom in Mersin in southern Turkiye. The first reactor is planned to be commissioned in 2025.
