March 27 (BTA) - Trade between Bulgaria and Egypt hit a record high of over one billion US dollars in 2017, with a surplus for Bulgaria of nearly 630 million dollars, it emerged from a meeting between Bulgarian Deputy Economy Minister Alexander Manolev and Egypt' Investment and International Cooperation Minister Sahar Nasr, the Economy Ministry said on Wednesday.

The two officials participated in the opening of a bilateral business forum in Cairo, attended by representatives of more than 100 companies.

Manolev stressed at the meeting that 2018 saw a decrease in two-way trade and the purpose of the forum and the visit to Egypt was to plan steps to reverse the drop. He said he believedthe forum was an excellent venue for information exchange and for the launch of bilateral business projects.

Bulgaria can expand its presence in the Egyptian market not just with foods and pharmaceuticals, but with high value-added products as well, Manolev stressed at a meeting with Industry, Trade and Small Industries Minister Amr Nassar. Egypt is interested in sharing experience in the automotive industry and mechanical engineering.

Meeting with the Minister of State for Military Production, Mohammed el Assar, and with Arab Organization for
Industrialization Chairman Abdel Moneim Al-Taras, Manolev discussed ways to deepen partnership in defence and military-industrial production.

Manolev is in Egypt with representatives of nearly 40 Bulgarian businesses as part of President Rumen Radev's official visit.
