The Orthodox Church marks the Feast of the Holy Protomartyr and Archdeacon Stephen. 

On this date in Bulgarian history:

1870: Bulgaria's first theatrical performance takes place in Ruse, on the Danube, adapted from Christoph von Schmid's novel Rosa von Tannenburg (Bulgarian title: The Tale of Ruzica).

1963: Diplomatic relations are established with Iceland.

1973: BTA hosts the first award ceremony for its Balkan Athlete of the Year Poll among Balkan countries' national news agencies. The first winner is Bulgarian 800 m runner Svetla Zlateva.

2006: Sofia Airport's new passenger Terminal 2 is commissioned.
