Shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday, both lanes of the single carriageway Ruse-Giurgiu Bridge crossing the Danube River were reopened to traffic, the Regional Administration in Ruse said in a press release.

The re-opening of the refitted 400-meter section (in the lane on the viaduct heading toward Bulgaria) took place after the completion of the first stage of the major repairs to the 70-year-old-brigde. Since the beginning of the repair works in the summer of 2024, traffic in this lane had been suspended, and vehicles were alternately allowed to pass in both directions using the opposite lane.

Marking the completion of the first phase of the bridge’s repair, Ruse Regional Governor Dragomir Draganov expressed gratitude to the Customs Agency, the Border Police General Directorate, and other state institutions for ensuring smooth traffic organization during the repair period. The ceremony was also attended by Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Romania, Radko Vlaykov.

Before traffic resumed, road markings were laid, and the first trucks and cars from Romania crossed into Bulgaria using the newly renovated lane.

The major repair works on the bridge are scheduled to resume on January 8, 2025, when a 413-meter section of the lane heading toward Romania will be closed. As before, the repair works on the Danube Bridge will proceed without a complete closure of the structure. Traffic will be managed so that vehicles can pass alternately in both directions using the lane where no construction is taking place.
