PM Borissov Will Press
Brussels to Stop "Incessant
Invectives" against Turkey

Sliven, Southeastern Bulgaria, October 12 (BTA) - "I will insist that the colleagues in Brussels stop these incessant invectives, because Brussels is far away but the Turkish border is here, and there are nearly four million refugees there [in Turkey]," Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said here on Saturday. "Neither camps nor fences or any measures whatsoever can stop them if they start coming by the hundreds of thousands."

The PM was apparently referring to a tweet by European Council President Donald Tusk: "We will never accept that refugees are weaponised and used to blackmail us," responding to a threat by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to open his country's border and let 3.6 million migrants flood the EU if the bloc labels 'occupation' Turkey's military operation in Northern Syria.

"As of today's date, I can categorically confirm that we have a clear understanding with President Erdogan on the basis of the agreement [with the EU], on the basis of good-neighbourliness, and the Turkish authorities quite strictly and properly observe the agreement with regard to Bulgaria," Borissov said. In his opinion, the solution to the situation lies in diplomacy, pressure, cessation of hostilities and handling of developments in Syria. LG
